RECAP OF NBL MEET #1 3/3/21
FYI and for newbie Parents on XC Scoring: Lower score wins (like golf) based on the top 5 overall team finishers, also the top 7 runners from each team can “displace” or add to the score of the other teams runners; after the top 7 runners, all remaining finishers were consolidated into the JV results:
Varsity Boys result: MCHS 20, Windsor 35 / JV Boys result: MCHS 15, Windsor Inc.
Carrillo Boys were short three of its top five, but Juniors Jacob Donohue and Oswaldo Rodriguez set a strong opening pace, with Jacob opening the gap during the big loops around camps and easing it home in 11:40 (5:04 pace over 2.3 miles) and Oswaldo 2nd place in 12:01. Adding some excitement, Sophomore Jonathan Donohue ran a smart race, letting 7 Windsor runners take-off for the first 1K, pulling the rest of the MCHS crew back into the mix, then Jonathan made an aggressive move to pass top Windsor finisher, Senior Landon McAlister in the last 800m, but then was caught by Landon’s fierce kick of Windsor who took third place. Solid Varsity performances by Sophomore Sean Gubera and Senior Bryce Lindemann and special recognition for outstanding Freshman Gabe Sitton, who finished 7th overall, rounding out our Varsity team’s roster for this meet.
Varsity Girls result: MCHS 21, Windsor 40 / JV Girls result: Both teams incomplete!
Carrillo Ladies roster consisted of all Freshmen and only one Sophomore, as we sat out all of our Juniors/Seniors and most of our Sophomores. Visiting Coach Matt from Windsor, was obliging enough to let a few of our rising Sophomore Varsity girls (Avery Hedden, Carmen Jimenez and Ella Chung) pace for the first mile of this race. …Which was a great help for as this was for most runners racing on this day, their first-ever high school race! A very strong Freshman Gracie Trenam ran away with the victory by more than one minute, running a very legit avg. 6:09/mile pace! Windsor Junior Elsa Nolen cleared the rest of the field by more than 20 seconds, followed by the Freshman duo of Kira Moe and Isabella Mathiesen finishing 3-4, then 4 Pumas finishing 6-7-8 to wrap up the victory for the Girls: Sophomore Josephine Hoagland and Freshman trio of Leyna Gorauskas, Nola McGarva and Mia Carra.
It was great to see our student athletes back “on the course” racing again and despite the short season, both of these teams are expected to make the upcoming track/distance season an interesting one. Special thanks to Samantha and Patrick Donohue, who helped with timing our meet and organizing results, guest starter MCHS Assistant Principle Albert Ettedgui, others on the MCHS staff, all our Coaches and Parent Volunteers for helping us keep a safe and supportive environment!
